Udyam Registration vs GST Registration: What UP MSMEs Actually Need

10 June 2026 · Team

One of the most common questions we hear from new business owners is: “I already have GST registration, do I still need Udyam?” The short answer is yes — they serve different purposes, and most growing MSMEs need both.

What GST registration does

GST registration makes your business a recognized taxpayer under the Goods and Services Tax system. It’s generally required once your turnover crosses the applicable threshold, or immediately if you’re doing inter-state supply or export. Without it, you can’t legally collect GST, claim input tax credit, or (for exporters) claim GST refunds on zero-rated supplies.

What Udyam registration does

Udyam registration is a classification, not a tax registration. It officially recognizes your business as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise under the MSMED Act. This classification is what most government subsidy schemes, priority-sector bank loans, and delayed-payment protections are actually tied to — not your GST status.

Why the confusion happens

Both registrations ask for similar business details, and both are done online, which makes them feel interchangeable. In practice, a business can have GST registration without Udyam (missing out on scheme eligibility), or in rare cases, qualify for Udyam without needing GST registration yet (e.g., turnover below the GST threshold).

The practical takeaway

If you’re planning to apply for any MSME subsidy scheme — state or central — check your Udyam status first, separately from your GST status. The two aren’t linked automatically, and having one doesn’t mean you have the other.
